'Baconology' - We're Sizzlin'!

Baconology - back cover
My contributor's copy of Baconology, an anthology of horror stories involving bacon (yes, really!) arrived last week here in Abu Dhabi.

My own story, The Smell of Bacon, revolves around a traditional Nigerian method of weight loss - swallowing a tapeworm segment. This 'old wives' tale' also holds that to remove the tapeworm all one has to do is hold a piece of bacon in front of the mouth and the tapeworm will emerge through that orifice.

Yuck!

A Tooth Fairy Calls
That's Life magazine, Australia,  have published my spooky short story A Tooth Fairy Calls in their Fast Fiction section.

This story started life as a 150-word piece of flash fiction in the Saudi Gazette's kids' supplement four years ago, and in The Weekly News as a short story two years ago. Now it's seeing life again on the other side of the world as a reprinted short story.

If only I could have lucrative flashes of inspiration like this every day!

Slingink Scribbling Slam
My favourite writing competition, the Slingink Scribbling Slam (formerly known as Eurofiction) has started. My Round One entry's done and awaiting a further edit before submission, and as always I'm full of hope and optimism.

Alas, the positivity is destined not to last too long. From past experience I know I haven't got what it takes to win the plaudits in this competition. I'll probably have one or two good rounds, I may even win one of the six rounds, but the bottom line is my work tends to be a bit too lowbrow for the judges. Not that I'm complaining. I generally write stories I hope to sell, and in the past I've placed most of the stories I write for the competition.

There's still time to enter - just follow the link below:

So let the Games begin!

Mind the Gap
My short story A Day for Decisiveness - originally a piece of 200-word flash fiction, but more recently short-listed for The National newspaper's annual short story competition in its expanded form - was published yesterday.

The link below is to the electronic version in The National's Saturday magazine supplement where this supernatural rom-com appears:

http://www.thenational.ae/arts-culture/short-story-a-day-for-decisiveness

The print version was very professionally done, with plenty of excellent illustrations and a rather scary photo of yours truly.

This story was hanging around in my archives for ages, and in spite of its 'cuteness' factor I couldn't even sell it to a womag. Mind you, the judge of the competition was a dissident lady writer from the Middle East who now lives in London where the story's set. Perhaps she liked the descriptions of her home-from-home.
