Where Do Writers' Ideas Come From

Ideas for new short stories have been a bit thin on the ground recently, partly because I've gotten a bit fed up with writing dark fiction where one, or two, or several characters are dispatched in imaginative ways.

Anyhow, I seem to be getting back into the swing of things, mostly because I've started walking around the remote desert facility where I work.

Whereas on a treadmill you end up checking your speed, heartbeat, distance covered, etc., every five minutes, on an outdoor walk you have time to reflect, plan in your head and work out intricate twists and turns to a story.

Bottom line is, I now have several humorous short stories planned out and ready to be worked up from 250 - 350-word outl.

Yetis Rule

Grainy 'Yeti' Photo
Just finished a yeti story which I hope to place with an anthology.

The only potential problem with The Yeti Hunters is that as the story develops it focuses more on the anthropologist and anthropologist's daughter searching for yetis than on the yetis themselves.

That said, my story The Conservators, which appeared in the recently published Alienology anthology dealt more with the mind set of the human survivors on a critically polluted planet Earth than with their alien 'saviours', the Conservators.

As for my yeti tale - I'll keep you posted.

'An Elizabethan Tale' Published on Every Day Fiction

My humorous 1,000-word short story, An Elizabethan Tale, has been published on the excellent site Every Day Fiction (EDF).

What I enjoy about EDF is that you get a bite-size piece of fiction every day - which can be of any genre - and get to discuss what you liked or found wanting in the story. Even though there are occasional spats amongst those commenting (and I'm not entirely innocent of this myself), generally any negative critisisms are aimed at helping fellow writers improve their writing and are taken in good grace. And even if a major row erupts, it's usually all forgotten by the following day.

So how did An Elizabethan Tale get on on EDF? Alas, it scored low (lucky I'm a thick-skinned veteran), but there were many positive comments. When all's said and done though, I'm glad this story finally got to see the light of day - it's one I've always felt deserved a wider audience.

My Victorian ghost story, The Judges, has been accepted for publication in RuneWright's anthology Best Served Cold - Vol. I; An Eye for an Eye. This tale takes place somewhere around East Anglia and involves supernatural power held ancient

RuneWright are the new boys on the block as far as independent publishing houses go, and have got off to a flying start with their first two anthologies, Penny Dread Tales (Vol. I) and It Lives (Vol. I).

Making Money from Limericks!

Furious Wife Limerick
Back in 1995 I illustrated some limericks I had written, framed them, and to my knowledge they're still hanging in the bar of Jumbo Country Club, in Mazowe, Zimbabwe.

Well, since 1995 I've built up quite a portfolio of limericks, and today I started adding illustrations to them with a view to selling them. Mind you, even if I can't sell them, they'll be a talking point mounted on my wall.

The picture to the right is my first more recent endeavour to add life to my limericks. It's not perfect, but since it's my first effort in more than fifteen years, I'm quite proud of it.

In spite of the odd colourisation and bluriness of the scan amd the fact that I'm way out of practice, what do you think?

P.S. The current picture is a dummy pic - I'll be changing it tomorrow when I've coloured my Limerick illustration!
