From Every Day Fiction's website:

"Every Day Fiction is a magazine that specializes in bringing you fine fiction in bite-size doses. Every day, we publish a new short story of 1000 words or fewer that can be read during your lunch hour, on transit, or even over breakfast."

http://www.everydayfiction.com/

This is one of my favourite sites, allowing me to read, examine and comment on fellow writers' work. Occasionally there's a spat between writer and commentors, or between commentors even, but generally it's a good-humoured place to visit.

Every Day Fiction, and their online sister publication, Every Day Poets, have published several pieces of my work in the past and are set to publish my 1000-word story An Elizabethan Tale either next month or in September.

I'll keep you informed.

Where Do a Writer's Ideas Come From - 1?

Tramp
This week I've been working on a short story based on an incident involving a friend of mine twenty-five years or so ago. My friend, JM, went to a London gym, finished showering, and discovered his clothes and other property had been stolen.

The gym owner's response? "Not my problem, mate. You can pick some clothing from the lost property box to go home in."

I ended up wondering what would have happened if my friend had got involved in an accident and lost his memory? Would he perhaps be mistaken for a tramp? What would his partner think had happened to him?

There was still no real story though, so I wrote from the point of view of a policeman reopening a missing person's case after the missing man's stolen watch turns up for sale.

At 2,000 words, I have great hopes for this story. I'll keep you posted.

'You' Magazine, South Africa

'You' Magazine - South Africa
My story Blood and Sweat (which isn't half as gory as the title suggests) appears in the July 7th issue of South Africa's You magazine.

To read the story, click on the link at the bottom of this blog entry, turn one page inside to the contents page, and click on the 'Fiction' section.

I must say, I'm highly impressed with the layout and the illustration - and the story, of course! In fact, it was one of those stories I've got that's been looking for a home for a while. So what a great home it's eventually found!

In Abu Dhabi, I learned from my South African friends that You magazine is available in the upmarket Spinney's supermarket. When I went to Spinney's, I discovered it's the most well-stocked magazine, though this is probably due to the number of South African customers. Even so, this fact was rather good for my ego.

Let's hope it's not a one-off and that I can capitalise on this success.

"Where's that Annabel got to?"
Good news continues on the Canterbury Tales front. My Haberdasher's Second Tale (aka The Troubadour's Tale) was stortlisted for the Global Short Story Competition (May), and my Prioress's Second Tale (aka Annabel and the Witch) has been accepted for publication in The Specusphere's Myths and Legends anthology.

More on this later as the editing process progresses.
