Unfortunately, most of the earlier comments on EDF seemed to be focusing on the story's literary shortcomings, to such an extent that none of those folk who have commented so far have noticed something quite obvious - that the name of the owner of the pumpkin field, Leon Whale, is an anagram of 'Halloween'.
Alas, later comments took a turn towards couched accusations of racial insensitivity. Both main characters did come across as ignorant and bigoted, but that's the point of fiction - to expose human strengths and shortcomings through a story's characters
