Emiliano Martinez (Argentine Goalkeeper) Shows off his Golden 'Glove'

Wow! Sometimes it's difficult to believe the behaviour of celebrities, or in this case 'instant' celebrity Emiliano Martinez, who in his excitement at pulling off a penalty save and psyching out a French penalty taker, secured Argentina's third World Cup triumph.

When I started off my limerick to commemorate this inauspicious event, I must admit I was struggling, but then the words came, scanning more or less perfectly - except perhaps for rhyming 'Martinez' with 'penis', though I think the words are close enough to count as a half-rhyme.

Anyhow, here it is:

'Abnormal' Emiliano Martinez Limerick

The Argentine keeper was told
to keep the French players on hold.
And for this, Martinez,
was blessed with a penis
some twelve inches long, made of gold.

Elon Musk - Champion of Freedom

So much for that freedom of speech Elon Musk's always talking about. Just imagine, banning a bunch of journalists from Twitter because they file a report about him cancelling an account that gives updates on where his private jet is. Musk says the site endangers his family, which may or may not be true.

Then Musky has the audacity to say 'The People have spoken' after a hokey referendum on whether or not to un-ban the journalists' accounts, rather than admit that he was wrong. Anyhow, below is the promised limerick:

Elon Musk Freedom of Speech Limerick

Says Elon Musk, everyone's free
to post on his platform. Whoopeee!
Yet if you should go
against Elon's flow
he'll ban you from Twitter with glee.

Donald the Superhero

The bizarre launch of Donald Trump Superhero trading cards was all over the news, yesterday.

What's not to mock? Even some of the Donald's closest allies were in front of the camera berating the ex-Prez. That said, at $99 a pop, they sold out toot sweet as the French might (not) say.

Well, while I was out jogging, I wrote the limerick below in my head. I must admit, I could only think of 'Nero' and 'zero' as rhymes for 'hero', but they do kinda fit.

Then there was the word 'trading' which doesn't scan as well as it might. Even so, not a bad effort, even if I say so myself.

Donald the Superhero Limerick

Trump acted like Emperor Nero,
a heartless, historical zero.
Yet still his fans bought
trading cards in support
of his view of himself as a hero.

Which Trees, Please!

A Sloth not in an Oak Tree

In a poem I recently read (an excellent sonnet, I might add), a cute little Pacific Coast deer ended up sheltering under a tropical pine tree found only on a Pacific Island.

Not to worry, the confusion was quickly spotted and sorted out and a suitable tree substituted.

However, the incident did lead to the limerick below:

Arboreal Antitheses Limerick

When writing of trees, please stay calm,
or else you might spread much alarm;
for oaks aren't a place
where a sloth shows its face,
nor do bears climb a coconut palm.

The Big Lie

It's become fashionable to deny what we don't want to believe, much like a reflex action from a doctor whacking us below the kneecap with a small mallet.

There's no point 'debating' with deniers, no matter what persuasion they are, whether they're denying due to their politics or their religion, or just through peer pressure.

Everyone these days seems to stick to their guns and get abusive and intransigent. What to do but to write a limerick? - see below:

Alas, it's become a lame ruse,
to doubt what offends you and choose
to question elections
and vaccine injections
and label the truth as fake news.
